Do you ever get the feeling that things are meant to happen? When things just fall into place and something good comes out of it?
Thats pretty much what happened here, and I have Lee from A1 fitness to thank for it on this occasion. I met Lee during a shoot for a Clio cup race car, we were chatting about various bits while the car was running laps and being set up and Lee mentioned that his friend had these new short track racers that they just brought over from the US, and offered to put me in touch.
A couple of days later Lee dropped me a message and said the guys were having a test day pretty local to me, and put me in touch with James, the driver of the car above. We confirmed the plan and it was all good to go. EASY!
We had been given access to the track by the owners (Cheers guys!) after lunch once some other teams had finished testing, and we were blessed with some bright blue sky's that wouldn't have been out of place in California, not to matter here in Northamptonshire. The sun was very high in the sky so gave a bit of challenging light to shape the car causing some harsh shadows on the front end that I filled in using the Lencarta Safari lighting kit.
Creating some nice back lighting on the car and driver.
The team have two of these cars running this year, and not having enough lights to over power that first day of summer sun on both cars we flipped round to use the sun to light both cars, again with a little flash to fill in some shadow areas.
Knowing we were running short on time before the track would be open again we shot a couple more compositions, then shot some actions shots of the traditional stock racer as it took to the track.
The sounds of these cars hammering it round the track on their own is enough to put a smile on any petrolheads face, the sound of a live race must be incredible!
With engines pushing 600-800BHP and not much more than a chain link fence between you and the action its a sight to see and hear.
Not that the smaller GSXR engined cars are anything to laugh about, the combination of that 1000cc motorbike engine and sequential shift box shifts these round the track at breakneck speed sounding like a podracer from Starwars at full chat. This was "only" on a tarmac track, with a single car, but they also race full contact..... on dirt tracks. Something ill be checking out when the boys race at Coventry later this year.
Once again thanks to Lee at A1 fitness for putting me in touch, and to James and the rest of the team for being so cool.
